Wheels for All – Inclusive Cycling Volunteer Job Description

About Wheels for All Oxford
Wheels for All provides inclusive cycling facilities for anyone aged 16+ in a safe and supportive environment. Sessions currently run on the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month from 09:30-12.00 with a view to increase this to every week.Sessions take place at the Athletics Track. Horspath Road, Oxford, OX4 2RR.

Parking, changing rooms and bathrooms are all available on site and refreshments are provided at each session. Wheels for All is a national inclusive cycling initiative developed by Cycling Projects with the aim of making cycling accessible to all with a particular focus on offering fun.

There is a wide range of bikes available during the session including a wheelchair transporter, several tricycles, a quad, side by sides, a tandem, hand cycles, e-bike and some shopper bikes. Participants generally come with a carer or support from their school or club and the session offers an opportunity to socialise for everyone attending. Independent participants looking for assistance in re-discovering the confidence to cycle are also welcome, including those in older age groups.

Cycling is both physically and cognitively stimulating; for some participants this is the only opportunity they have to take part in physical activity.

Volunteer Roles and Expected Tasks
Role A – Session Leader & Helpers

 Session set up including moving bikes from storage to trackside (Essential)

 Able to cycle and help ride alongside users on the track (Essential)

 Have an understanding of bike mechanics ( Desirable - training can be provided)

 Ensure participants are all wearing correctly fitted helmets (training provided) and assisting in selecting suitable bike.

 Willing to engage with people who have a range of learning and physical disabilities and range of ages (Essential).

 Regular volunteers will be required to complete a DBS check, and undertake a safeguarding and first aid course (Essential – can be provided by WFA).

Hours Session Leaders: 8.30-12.30 on Fridays when available Helpers: 9.30-11.00 or 11.00 – 12.30 (or both) on Fridays when available

Role B – Session Coordinator/Administrator

 Meet and greet participants (who have a range of learning and physical disabilities) and ensure that they feel welcome.

 Registering participants, recording data and consent form*

 Ensuring photo consent is fully understood*.

 Help provide refreshments for participants.

 Support the advertising and marketing of sessions (e.g. website) (Experience Desirable) Hours

 9.00-12.00 on Fridays** * Must follow GDPR guidelines (training provided) ** Some administrative tasks could be undertaken off-site

Commitment Level Wheels for All are looking for Session Leaders and Session Coordinators who can regularly volunteer their time. The programme would like to move to running weekly, and a group of volunteers would allow for a rota to be drawn up to provide flexibility for volunteers and freeing up time for holidays etc without sessions having to be cancelled. N.B Helpers and casual volunteers are also very welcome to get in touch (or drop in). Roles would be specific to the needs of participants on any given day.

National Diabetes Week - #SeeDiabetesDifferently

National Diabetes Week takes place from 10 to 16 June and we're increasing the public's understanding of diabetes. This will help tackle the stigma many people with all types of diabetes feel. #SeeDiabetesDifferently

We know diabetes is complicated and hard to understand so we want to help people know more about diabetes. Not just as a condition, but about how it feels to live with it.

We want people to see diabetes differently.

Five things about diabetes everyone should know

1. One in 15 of us live with diabetes.

One in 15 of us live with diabetes. That's 4.7 million people in the UK – more than cancer and dementia combined. That includes one million people who don't even know they have diabetes.

Chances are, lots of people you know are living with diabetes.

2. There are different types.

Type 1 and Type 2 are the two main types of diabetes. There are rarer types too. What they all have in common is they raise sugar levels in the blood. And that can seriously damage the body.

But there are differences in why they happen and how they're treated.

3. Anyone can get it.

Why people get diabetes is complicated. Some things increase your risk of developing it, from genetics and ethnic background to gender, age and lifestyle factors. But sometimes it isn't clear why people get it.

Anyone can get diabetes, at anytime. It doesn't discriminate.

4. It's not just tablets or injections.

It's so much more than that. Every day involves a thousand little questions, decisions and things to remember. It's appointments, checks, calculations,what to eat. It's your care on your shoulders. It's knowing things won't always go to plan.

It's day in, day out. It never stops. It's relentless.

5. It never stops, but you don't have to either.

When you've got diabetes, just getting through the day can be a monumental achievement. But it doesn't mean life stops. People have become professional athletes, topped the charts and ruled the country with diabetes.

It might make life harder but it doesn't have to change your ambitions or adventure

Are you looking for a truly rewarding experience? Would you like to make a practical difference to older people in your community who have had a fall or are worried about their balance?

No need to know about exercise.

Strength & Balance Community Classes that are in need of a volunteer

We would really like a regular weekly commitment from you for 15 mins. before and after the class (i.e. a total of 1.5 hrs.)

Generation Games is Age UK Oxfordshire's physical activity service. Their main focus is on Strength & Balance falls prevention classes which they are rapidly rolling out across the county. These classes help to improve a person's balance, muscle strength as well as confidence. Currently there are 41 classes with a plan to expand further. The Strength & Balance classes are taught by highly trained Level 4 Postural Stability instructors. People may attend the class if they are worried about their balance or they may have been referred by their GP or healthcare professional.

Purpose of this volunteer role: To assist the instructor with practical tasks during the class.

What you can expect:

 Full induction and initial training session on what you will be doing

 A member of Generation Games to accompany you on your first session

 We ask you to complete our volunteer application forms; depending on your location and ability to travel you can expect to start volunteering within 2 weeks

 Experience within a well-respected charity

 Helping in one of the most practical ways to enable older people who are worried about their balance to reduce falls

 Reasonable travel costs and agreed expenses reimbursed

 A friendly and supportive environment

Main tasks:

 Help with setting up the room for the class, taking the register help with handing out resistance bands during the class

 Assisting individuals who may require more one to one support e.g. finger tip support for getting out of a chair or adding additional chairs for support in front of the person when needed

 Prepare and share a cup of tea or coffee with the participants after the session and enjoy a chat in some sessions

Desirable qualities and skills:

 An interest in helping older people and a desire to persuade them of the benefits of getting active

 A motivated and enthusiastic individual

 Reliable with good time keeping

 A non-judgmental and empathetic attitude

 Good communication and listening skills

 Proactive but also able to take instruction

 Ability to adhere to Age UK Oxfordshire's Boundaries, Health and Safety, Policies and Procedures. Volunteers must be able to build professional relationships with clients, within clearly defined boundaries.
